著者の岩崎量示は埼玉県出身。2005年に北海道・糠平（現在のぬかびら源泉郷）に移り住み、以来、タウシュベツ川橋梁の記録を続けてきました。撮り始めてから15年となる2020年。節目の年に合わせて刊行を開始したのが『タウシュベツ日誌』シリーズです。写真展や写真集で発表を続けてきた岩崎が、膨大な数に上る写真ストックのさらなる発表の場を求めて創刊したものです。

タウシュベツ川橋梁は、北海道の大雪山国立公園に残るコンクリートアーチ橋です。この橋は、1937年に鉄道橋として建設されました。現在は1年のうちに水没と出現とを繰り返しながら崩落へと向かっています。時期によっては水面下に沈んで見えないことから、また、近い将来の崩落で失われることが予想されることから、「幻の橋」の別名を持ちます。

試作号から数えて5作目となる本作では、秋から冬にかけての大雪山国立公園の風景とともにタウシュベツ川橋梁の姿を切り取っています。前作で一度は完全に水没した橋が、糠平湖の水位低下によってふたたび姿を見せました。

紅葉に彩られた秋や、雪景色が広がる冬の北海道で、タウシュベツ川橋梁が時の流れとともに変化し、再び水の中へ消えていく様子を見て取ることができる一冊となっています。

冬に分厚い氷を突き破ってタウシュベツが徐々に姿を現す場面や、降りしきる雪の中にうっすらと遠望する写真などからは叙情的な印象すら感じられるかもしれません。

本シリーズを通じて橋梁の姿を時系列で追いかけることで、その変遷がより鮮明に感じられる構成となっています。タウシュベツファンはもちろん、初めて手にする方にも、タウシュベツ川橋梁と大雪山国立公園の美しい風景を味わっていただける一冊です。

Photographer Ryoji Iwasaki hails from Saitama Prefecture. In 2005, he relocated to Nukabira, Hokkaido (now known as Nukabira Gensenkyo), and has since been documenting the Taushubetsu Bridge. By the year 2020, marking 15 years since he began his documentation, he launched the "Taushubetsu Journal" series in commemoration. Iwasaki, having showcased his works through photo exhibitions and photo books, initiated this series as a platform to present his extensive collection of photographs.

The Taushubetsu Bridge is a concrete arch bridge located in Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan National Park. Constructed as a railway bridge in 1937, it now faces a cycle of submersion and re-emergence throughout the year, slowly succumbing to decay. Due to its periodic disappearance beneath the water and the anticipated eventual collapse, it's also referred to as the "Phantom Bridge."

This installment, the fifth when counting from the pilot, captures the bridge against the backdrop of Daisetsuzan National Park's scenery from autumn to winter. In a striking turn of events, the bridge that was fully submerged in the previous edition has re-emerged, thanks to the decreasing water levels of Lake Nukabira.

Witness the bridge, painted with autumn hues and amidst the expansive snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, as it undergoes changes with the passage of time, gradually fading back into the water. Scenes of the Taushubetsu piercing thick winter ice to slowly reveal itself, or the distant view of the bridge in heavy snowfall, might evoke a lyrical sense of emotion.

Through the series, by following the bridge chronologically, its transitions are vividly portrayed. This volume is perfect not only for fans of Taushubetsu but also for those being introduced to it, offering them a taste of the breathtaking scenery of the Taushubetsu Bridge and Daisetsuzan National Park.
