著者の岩崎量示は埼玉県出身。2005年に北海道・糠平（現在のぬかびら源泉郷）に移り住み、以来、タウシュベツ川橋梁の記録を続けてきました。撮り始めてから15年となる2020年。節目の年に合わせて刊行を開始したのが『タウシュベツ日誌』シリーズです。写真展や写真集で発表を続けてきた岩崎が、膨大な数に上る写真ストックのさらなる発表の場を求めて創刊したものです。

タウシュベツ川橋梁は、北海道の大雪山国立公園に残るコンクリートアーチ橋です。この橋は、1937年に鉄道橋として建設されました。現在は1年のうちに水没と出現とを繰り返しながら崩落へと向かっています。時期によっては水面下に沈んで見えないことから、また、近い将来の崩落で失われることが予想されることから、「幻の橋」の別名を持ちます。

創刊から2年目を迎えた本作には、2020年9月から2021年2月までの半年間に撮影したタウシュベツ川橋梁の写真を収録。100ページを超えるボリュームになりました。これは、例年とは違い、タウシュベツ川橋梁が水没せずに冬を迎えた貴重な姿をおよそ90点の写真で収録したためです。

紅葉の季節や、雪に覆われた冬の森を背景にしたタウシュベツ川橋梁の光景は、これまであまり記録されたことがない場面です。中でも雪景色の中で水面に映りこんだめがね橋の様子は、本作の中でも白眉と言えるでしょう。

『タウシュベツ日誌』シリーズを通じて、時間の流れとともに変化するタウシュベツ川橋梁の姿を皆さんと共有できればと思います。シリーズを追い続けてきた方はもちろん、初めて触れる方にも、印象に残る一冊になるはずです。

Photographer Ryoshi Iwasaki hails from Saitama Prefecture. In 2005, he relocated to Nukabira, now known as Nukabira Gensenkyo, in Hokkaido. Since then, he has consistently documented the Taushubetsu Bridge. He marked 15 years of capturing its beauty in 2020, which also coincided with the launch of the "Taushubetsu Journal" series. After showcasing his work in photo exhibitions and collections, Iwasaki started this series to provide a platform for an even more extensive collection of his photographs.

The Taushubetsu Bridge is a concrete arch bridge located within the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido. Constructed in 1937 as a railway bridge, it now faces a cycle of submersion and emergence throughout the year, slowly deteriorating with each season. At times, the bridge is submerged below the water surface, earning it the moniker "Phantom Bridge," especially as its eventual collapse is anticipated in the near future.

This edition, celebrating its second year since inception, contains photographs of the Taushubetsu Bridge taken from September 2020 to February 2021. The book spans over 100 pages. This extended length is mainly because it includes approximately 90 photographs that capture the rare sight of the bridge remaining unsubmerged as it welcomed winter—a departure from its usual pattern.

Particularly captivating are scenes of the bridge set against the backdrop of fall foliage and a winter forest blanketed in snow. Within the collection, reflections of the bridge that resemble eyeglasses set against a snowy landscape stand out as a highlight.

Through the "Taushubetsu Journal" series, Iwasaki hopes to share the evolving visage of the Taushubetsu Bridge as time progresses. Whether you've followed the series or are encountering it for the first time, this installment promises to leave a lasting impression.
