著者の岩崎量示は埼玉県出身。2005年に北海道・糠平（現在のぬかびら源泉郷）に移り住み、以来、タウシュベツ川橋梁の記録を続けてきました。撮り始めてから15年となる2020年。節目の年に合わせて刊行を開始したのが『タウシュベツ日誌』シリーズです。写真展や写真集で発表を続けてきた岩崎が、膨大な数に上る写真ストックのさらなる発表の場を求めて創刊したものです。

タウシュベツ川橋梁は、北海道の大雪山国立公園に残るコンクリートアーチ橋です。この橋は、1937年に鉄道橋として建設されました。現在は1年のうちに水没と出現とを繰り返しながら崩落へと向かっています。時期によっては水面下に沈んで見えないことから、また、近い将来の崩落で失われることが予想されることから、「幻の橋」の別名を持ちます。

『タウシュベツ日誌 第1号』には、試作版として制作した前作『第0号』（2020年4月）から引き続き、日ごとに見映えが変化するタウシュベツ川橋梁の姿を時系列で収録しています。自然の力によって徐々に姿を変えていく橋梁を、2020年3月から8月までの半年間をかけて通い続け写真に収めました。

この期間は春の雪解けから、北海道の短い夏の終わりに当たります。糠平湖の水位が低い年だったため、全編を通してタウシュベツ川橋梁が沈むことはありませんでした。春の霧に包まれる雪の中に立つ姿や、新緑の中のタウシュベツ川橋梁など約45点の写真を収録しています。

観光シーズンだけでなく、訪れる人もまばらな時期もふくめた継続的なタウシュベツ川橋梁の記録写真集は類例がありません。

Photographer Ryoji Iwasaki hails from Saitama Prefecture. In 2005, he relocated to Nukabira Gensenkyo (formerly known as Nukabira) in Hokkaido and has since been dedicated to documenting the Taushubetsu Bridge. Marking 15 years since he began his project in 2020, he launched the "Taushubetsu Journal" series. This initiative was Iwasaki's response to the growing pile of photographs he accumulated, despite his continuous showcases in exhibitions and photo books.

The Taushubetsu Bridge, a concrete arch bridge, remains nestled within the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido. Constructed in 1937 as a railway bridge, it is now on a slow journey towards decay, submerging and re-emerging throughout the year. Due to periods where it's hidden beneath the water's surface and its impending collapse, it's often referred to as the "Phantom Bridge."

"Taushubetsu Journal: Volume 1" is a chronological collection of the ever-evolving Taushubetsu Bridge, continuing from its prototype, "Volume 0," produced in April 2020. Iwasaki captured the bridge's metamorphosis under nature's sway from March to August 2020.

This period spans from the thawing of spring snow to the end of Hokkaido's brief summer. Due to a low water level year at Lake Nukabira, the Taushubetsu Bridge never submerged throughout the volume. The book features around 45 photographs, capturing scenes like the bridge enveloped in spring mists amidst snow and its posture amidst fresh greenery.

Notably, continuous documentation of the Taushubetsu Bridge, covering both tourist seasons and quieter times, is unparalleled.
